Why Study Computer Science at Fisher?
The Computer Science Program aims to serve students who a) are majoring in computer science, b) wish to purse minors in mathematics or computer science, or c) are completing computer science requirements in the major programs in mathematics or the sciences. In all its courses, the Computer Science Program strives to provide its students with a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of, and an appreciation for, the power and applicability of computer science. The Program aims to provide the majors an excellent preparation for graduate study, careers in business or industry, and teaching at the secondary level.
The goals of the St. John Fisher College Computer Science program are to:
- Prepare students for graduate studies in computer science and related disciplines.
- Prepare students for careers in industry and teaching at the secondary school level.
- Develop students with critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Foster and promote in students a sense of ethical behavior and respect for diversity.
- Provide training in the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science.
- Provide background courses in areas of computer science as required by other departments.
Computer Science Major
Computer science concerns itself with the formulation and algorithmic solution of problems that can be implemented on computers, as well as the technological structures that facilitate the efficient transmission of data and design of networks.
The ever-changing face of the discipline requires that our courses be evaluated and changed, and new courses introduced, in order to deal with new developments. The curriculum progresses through courses in object-oriented programming, analysis, and design, data structures and algorithms, theory of computation, computer organization and design, computer security, Internet and networking, database theory and applications, web programming, and other required courses and electives.
The major in computer science provides training in the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. With attention to applications in science and business, the major directs students toward future graduate study or employment.
Successful Alumni
Graduates of our programs have distinguished themselves as mathematicians and computer scientists and can be found on the faculties of the University of Pittsburgh, University of Tennessee, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Monroe Community College. Many of our graduates have gone on for advanced degrees and have distinguished themselves at companies such as Kodak, Xerox, Paychex, and Verizon, among others. We point with pride to those who have entered the field of secondary education and are noted for their distinguished service as teachers. Others have become scientific programmers, statisticians, and actuaries.
Alumni Testimonials
"Fisher's student-to-professor ratio made it easy to get to know the professors very well. This provided a great learning environment and made the process a whole lot more enjoyable. It was a very positive experience."
Gay Green, Class of 1997
B.S., Computer Science;
Boris Rakover Award Winner;
Member of the Web-Page Team
Employed at Eastman Kodak Company
"My experience at SJFC was challenging and rewarding. Not once did a professor turn me away because s/he didn't have time to answer a question. I felt the teaching staff was responsive to the needs of the class as opposed to simply fulfilling the syllabus."
Amelia Harer Fedyk, Class of 1995
B.S., Computer Science
Software engineer at Raytheon in MA
"Computer Science faculty are there for you if you have a question and do their best to help you out. I always felt welcome to speak to them after class or drop by their offices with any concerns I had with an assignment or something covered in class. SJFC's Computer Science Program adapts to changing trends by updating its programming courses and course selection to meet current needs."
