Llewellyn Publishes Article in Science Scope

Douglas Llewellyn, adjunct faculty member for the graduate program in Mathematics/Science/ Technology Education (GMST), recently published an article in the March issue of Science Scope, the middle school journal for the National Science Teachers Association.

The article, “Choice: The dragon slayer of student complacency,” explains why choice is a strong intrinsic motivator for middle school students, and how science teachers can better engage their students in the learning process through differentiated instruction. Llewellyn suggests that when students have a choice to make, they feel empowered to select an instructional approach that is compatible with their own learning style, thus shifting the ownership of the learning from the teacher to the student. This article is based on Llewellyn’s book, Differentiated Science Inquiry, published by Corwin Press.
