Why Study History at Fisher?

Studying history at Fisher involves examining the issues, ideas, people, and events that gave rise to the world's major civilizations. It provides an understanding of the present by imposing order on the chaos of the past.

The History Program

Within the history curriculum, you will be challenged to unravel the complex and often conflicting interpretations of individual historians or schools of historiographical thought and work to comprehend the relationship among social evolution, economic and technological development, political conflict, and cultural change.

The department offers courses that incorporate a wide spectrum of time and geography and which utilize:

  • An international perspective that casts the widest possible coverage of how events and issues in one nation or culture have influenced those of another
  • An examination of conflicting theories or interpretations that provide you with the opportunity to draw your own conclusions regarding major issues
  • Encouragement to make assertions and judgments regarding the human and moral implications of actions, events, and ideas

What Can I Do With a Major in History?

Virtually anything! Recent graduates have pursued careers such as:

  • College professor
  • Lawyer
  • Teacher
  • Military officer
  • Government official
  • Research analyst
  • Technical writer
  • Sports writer

And that's just naming a few! Many also go on to graduate or law school.
