Ed.D. Admissions Requirements and Application Procedures

The Ed.D. in Executive Leadership program admits a cohort of approximately 20-25 candidates each year. Application deadlines can be found on the Graduate Admissions Deadlines for Graduate Admissions page.

Requirements for Admission to the Ed.D. Program

Candidates are required to provide evidence of their potential to meet the demands of a rigorous doctoral level program.

Admission to the Ed.D. in Executive Leadership is limited to qualified candidates who have:

  • A minimum of three years of successful management/administrative level experiences
  • Completed a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • A proven record of excellence in mid-level leadership and management

Ed.D. Application Procedures

The application process involves three phases:

Phase 1: Application

Candidates for admission are required to submit:

  • A completed application
  • Official college transcripts documenting completion of a master’s degree
  • Two recommendations from successful leaders currently practicing in your or a related profession
  • A supervisor's performance appraisal form which documents employment history and performance for the most recent two years
  • Three professional writing samples of no longer than five pages each with the total not exceeding ten pages
  • A current résumé
  • A concise essay of no more than one typed page, outlining the applicant's vision of leadership and reasons for applying to the program

Phase 2: Interview

Applicants who meet the requirements of Phase 1 are recommended for Phase 2 and will be required to:

  • Participate in a formal interview process
  • Provide an on-demand writing sample on the day of the interview

Phase 3: Notification

The admission process is completed as follows:

  • The doctoral program admission committee will review all required information and rank final candidates for admission to the program
  • 20-25 candidates will be selected for each cohort
  • The candidates will be notified and offered admission to the program
  • If any candidate among the finalists declines the offer or fails to submit the admissions deposit by the established deadline, the next eligible candidate on the waiting list will be offered admission

To comply with New York State regulations, all applicants to graduate-level teacher certification (or educational leadership certification) programs that will start on or after July 1, 2016 must provide St. John Fisher College with official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Miller Analogies Test (MAT), or the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST)*:

*The only exceptions to the admission requirement of a standardized exam (GRE, MAT, ASLT) for M.S. programs is one of the following:

  • An applicant already has a master's degree and a GPA in that degree of 3.5 or greater; or
  • An applicant already has a Ph.D. or equivalent (e.g. Ed.D. or J.D.)
