Local High School Students Spend a Day Discovering at Fisher

On Monday, August 12, St. John Fisher College and the Buffalo Bills hosted “Discover at Fisher” day for 50 local high school students from the East Rochester School District, the "Safe to be Smart" program, and the Rochester City School District’s “Horizons” summer camp program. The students spent the day on campus discovering a variety of career options and more – all in an effort to encourage them to keep literacy a priority in their lives.

After a welcome from President Donald Bain and his wife, Meg, the students participated in seven interactive sessions with Fisher faculty, staff, and students, as well as Buffalo Bills staff. Sessions were designed to encourage the students to celebrate literacy, while also giving them a chance to experience the feel of a college campus.

Discover at Fisher DayJennifer Granger from Fisher’s Athletic Department co-presented “Discover Nutrition” with local fitness coach Wanda Miller and Lackmann Culinary Services’ Executive Chef, Joel Kraft. They shared interesting facts about healthy eating habits for both athletes and non-athletes, and led the students through an exercise. Students also sampled healthy snacks, and even learned how to make them, leaving with a recipe book.

Cecil Felton, Media Center Coordinator and Cardinal TV Advisor at Fisher, presented the “Discover TV Production” session in the campus TV studio. Students learned about different career paths they could take in the communication field, and had a chance to shoot video and use the Fisher News TV set.

Dr. Fang Zhao, Associate Professor in the Wegmans School of Pharmacy, presented “Discover Healthy Habits.” Working in Fisher’s state-of-the-art pharmacy laboratory, students learned how to make their own sunscreen.

Andy Major, Buffalo Bills’ Vice President, Event Operations and Guest Experience, presented “Discover Careers in Sports: Chalk Talk,” where he talked about all of the career opportunities that exist with sports teams – for both minor and major leagues.

Education students Kelsey Murphy, Stephanie Sweeney, and Tracey Bayer led the “Discover through Reading” session. The students learned how to use Google Earth to research authors and books, and also had a chance to choose a book to bring home.

Teresa Brache, CCRN, Director of the Learning Resource Lab, Wegmans School of Nursing, hosted the “Discover Nursing” session in one of the School of Nursing’s cutting-edge simulation labs. There, students had an opportunity to learn CPR, how to take blood pressure, and work with the interactive simulation robots, putting them in a real-life emergency room scenario.

In addition, Yantee Slobert, Director of Fisher’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs, shared his story with the students and gave an overview of the diversity programs offered at the College.

Students also participated in a calisthenics session lead by some of Fisher’s top athletes. At the end of the day, they were treated as VIPs at the Buffalo Bills’ Community Relations tent, where they took in the afternoon practice. This was the sixth year for the event.
