St. John Fisher College School of Education Receives $7,500 Grant from Bank of America

The St. John Fisher College Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education has received a $7,500 grant from the Bank of America that will be used to support an ongoing partnership with the Rochester Early College International High School.

Dr. Michael Wischnowski, Dean of the School of Education, attended a check presentation at the Bank of America to receive the grant on May 20.

The grant will be specifically used for the College Club Program, an after-school college-readiness initiative that will serve up to 45 low-income, at-risk teens from the Rochester Early College International High School. The program will be available to students in 9th-12th grade, and the goal is to make high school graduation and ultimately college a reality for students who are at-risk of dropping out of high school and are largely underrepresented in college.

“Our College Club program provides students with opportunities to envision a college education for themselves and provides practical assistance in the admissions, financial aid, academic, and social aspects of college readiness through after-school events and on-campus visitations. The program also provides a positive college presence within the high school,” said Wischnowski.

Leading the program will be Dr. Jeff Liles, Associate Professor in the School of Education. The program follows another successful program by Liles in 2013 called the Partnership for Success, but College Club will be offered to more students and include some new components.

Throughout the duration of the program, the high school students will be mentored by Fisher students, and will meet weekly to discuss college readiness and conduct research on the topic. Four visits to the Fisher campus are also planned, where students will have the opportunity to shadow and interview college students and faculty, attend sessions on preparing for college-entrance exams, learn about summer programs for college-bound students, and become acquainted with the college application process. In addition, they will learn how to fill out financial aid forms, write college essays, plan college visits, and interview. One new component of this year’s program will include stops at some of Rochester’s cultural and educational landmarks, including the Rochester Museum and Science Center, Memorial Art Gallery, and Eastman Theatre.
