32nd Annual Teddi Dance to Honor Memory of Young Camper

Boy band hour, Jock jams hour, Diva hour, Senior hour, and Top Pop hour will make up five of the 24 hours of the 32nd Annual Teddi Dance for Love on February 21 and 22 as hundreds of St. John Fisher College students, faculty, and staff descend upon the dance floor to once again raise money for Camp Good Days and Special Times.

Preparations will begin on Thursday evening, when some members of the Teddi Committee start to transform the gym into the perfect haven for a dance marathon full of music and emotion.

To date, the Teddi Dance for Love has raised over $900,000 to benefit the children and families of Camp Good Days. And the year-long planning begins just as soon as the marathon ends, thanks to a dedicated committee of students.

Co-chairs Jenny Keeler and Olivia Gosdeck have been hard at work for the last year leading the Teddi Committee - the largest committee in the event’s history, with 104 members on the roster.

"To me, Fisher is Teddi. Whenever someone asks me about school, all I can talk about is the Teddi Dance because I have never been more proud of anything else that I have been involved in. It is such an amazing event that is really indescribable. I really can't explain what you see or the emotions you feel because everyone has a different experience and it effects people in different ways. But everyone who attends the dance at some point during the 24 hours feels a connection with those children at Camp Good Days and Special Times even if they have never been to camp," said Keeler.

In addition, the committee has already begun to collect hair donations as part of the event, which in turn will be donated to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Campaign. The committee is hoping to raise 1,400 inches of hair.

The event will also feature live performances by Ball in the House (a Boston-based band who has appeared on “America’s Got Talent”); Measure 13, the College’s a cappella group; and the Fisher faculty/staff band, Big Tuna and the Fishermen; among others. This year’s Honorary Chair is Maureen McGuire from WROC-TV Channel 8.

The proceeds from the event help grant the last wishes of Camp Good Days’ children, offering them a chance to enjoy a trip to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and other destinations in Orlando.

Sam ParkerThis year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Sam Parker, a young camper who lost his battle on November 27, 2013, after fighting the disease for six years. Parker is no stranger to Fisher, as he served as an honorary coach in the 2010 Courage Bowl.

His parents, Heather and Dan, remember their son as a happy kid, one who they say spent much of his time smiling, dancing, laughing, and being a kid. They credit Camp Good Days for giving him some of the “most amazing and meaningful adventures he ever had,” including the trip to Florida that Sam himself summed up with four simple words, “What an amazing trip.”

“Despite ever-present emotional and physical pain that would render most of us bedridden, Sam lived a life filled with joy, adventure, and bravery. He comforted us more than we did him. He taught us more about courage than we did him. And he taught us the power of a huge smile, a graceful heart, and a fighting spirit that simply didn’t know how to quit,” his mother said.

Sam will be remembered with a balloon launch after a brief dedication ceremony near the end of the dance, and his parents will be there to offer remarks and lead the launch.

Camp Good Days will also be raffling off a brand new car at this year’s dance. The raffle began on October 1, and tickets are $20.00 each, or 3 tickets for $50.00. They can be purchased by contacting Camp Good Days directly at (585) 624-5555 or (800) 785-2135 or online. Vanderstyne Toyota, with support from Toyota Motor Company, donated a 2014 LE Plus Corolla, and one hundred percent of all ticket sales will benefit the children and families of Camp Good Days.

The committee is also putting in extra efforts this year to encourage more faculty and staff participation. They will hold the 1st Annual Faculty and Staff Competition throughout the dance, pitting each school and staff members against each other in a jug fundraising match. Each individual school (School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, Wegmans School of Nursing, Wegmans School of Pharmacy, and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education) and staff will have labeled jugs where faculty and staff can designate donated money, along with posters where they can leave inspirational messages for the dancers. The jug and posters with the most support will win a prize for their office.
