Myths & Facts About Alcohol

Common myths and facts about alcohol supported by research*:


All college students drink and, when they drink, they drink to excess.

FACT: Use is over-estimated by college students. In reality:

  • 22.8% college students have never consumed alcohol
  • 28.2% college students have not consumed alcohol in the past 30 days


The buzz you get from a few drinks will be enhanced by having a few more drinks.

FACT: The pleasant effects of alcohol quickly become unpleasant when you drink more. More drinks will not make you feel any better, but instead will make you feel more impaired.


There is less alcohol in beer than in "hard liquor" (distilled spirits).

FACT: If you consume a "standard drink," then there is approximately one-half ounce of pure alcohol in:

  • 12 ounces of beer
  • 8 ounces of malt liquor (Cold 45, Schlitz, Molsen XXX, etc.)
  • 5 ounces wine
  • 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor (most vodka, rum, tequila, whiskey, etc.)


Having a high tolerance for alcohol is a good thing.

FACT: Having a high tolerance can actually be dangerous! A high tolerance simply means it takes more alcohol to feel drunk, but that doesn’t mean it takes more alcohol to actually get drunk. Having a high tolerance is risky because the drinker is likely to consume more alcohol to feel the desired effects, therefore increasing the chances of dangerous side effects (i.e. injury, alcohol poisoning, poor judgment).
