DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:The African American Studies department and Women in History &amp; Civil Rights First Year Program Learning Communities, in collaboration with the PeaceWomen Exhibit hosted by Lavery Library, invite you to a talk by Constance Mitchell, a Rochester civil rights activist.=0D=0AIn 1961 when she was elected to the Monroe County Board of Supervisors, (now the Monroe County Legislature) Constance Mitchell was the first African &ndash;American and woman in Monroe County elected into office and was the highest elected official among African-Americans in the United States. She was very active in the Civil Rights Movement and participated in the march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery. She and her husband attended the &ldquo;I Have Dream&rdquo; March on Washington, DC where Dr. King gave his famous speech. She also participated in NAACP demonstrations and sit-ins.=0D=0AMitchell served on numerous civic and business-related boards including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Way, Urban League of Rochester, Crime Stoppers and Action for a Better Community, Inc.
