On Saturday, December 5, St. John Fisher College hosted its annual "Day of Celebration," an all-day, campus-wide festival that showcases holiday celebrations from various races, cultures, ethnicities, and traditions. These observations include Kwanzaa, Three Kings, Hanukkah, Christmas, Asian New Year, Winter Fest, and Ramadan. This year, the focus of the Day of Celebration was the Filipino culture.

Last month, the Wegmans School of Nursing received its newest simulation mannequin—a birthing mother. The mannequin, "Noelle," is a high-functioning robot that can simulate different health conditions, which in this case are all related to labor and giving birth.

Pam Carzo and Carolyn Martin, who served as the St. John Fisher College coordinators for the United Way's 2009 LIVE UNITED campaign, are the recipients of a Rising Star Award. The award is given by the United Way to first-time coordinators who run outstanding campaigns within their organizations.

At an early evening reception on November 17, St. John Fisher College awarded its eighth annual Justinian Medal to Richard A. Calabrese '57. In addition, the College issued a special citation and posthumous recognition of Norman A. Palmiere, Sr., Esq. '57, who was a college classmate and close personal friend of Calabrese.

The Italian Women's Civic Club (IWCC) has awarded scholarships to St. John Fisher College seniors Ashley Basso and Luke Lennox, and junior Marissa Rose Canori. Basso and Lennox are recipients of Dante Scholarships, while Canori received the Philip J. San Fillipo Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships are given to students in recognition of their academic achievement, and in order to promote pride in Italian American heritage.

St. John Fisher College will host "Philosophy Day: Philosophy and the Catholic Heritage" on Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19 in the Midlevel of the Golisano Gateway on campus. "World Philosophy Day" is observed globally as an occasion for people to reflect upon the importance of critical thinking, world peace, international cooperation, and the love of wisdom. The sessions at Fisher are free and open to the public.

The Small Business Council of Rochester, an affiliate of the Rochester Business Alliance, has named Thomas Bonadio '71 as its 2009 Business Person of the Year. Bonadio, who was chosen from a pool of seven finalists, received the award at the Small Business Council Gala Luncheon on October 14.

On Tuesday, October 27, the Early Learning Center at St. John Fisher College held a Trike-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The little trike riders raised $1,010 in just one morning.

An editorial by Dr. Jill Lavigne, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, was recently published by the
British Medical Journal. The article, "Smoking Cessation Agents and Suicide," discusses the risks associated with drugs that help individuals to quit smoking, and urges patients to educate themselves in order to make an informed decision.

Lavery Library's latest exhibit, "El Campo: La Crisis En Silencio (Rural Mexico's Silent Crisis)," is on display through December 22 at St. John Fisher College. The exhibit features photographs by Joseph Sorrentino, taken during his trips to rural Mexico in 2003 and 2008. Featured in the Lower Level Gallery, the exhibit is free and open to the public.
