St. John Fisher College’s School of Business Presents Jack DePeters ’73 with Excellence in Management Award
Last night, the St. John Fisher College School of Business hosted the Excellence in Management Awards dinner to honor the alumni winners of the Excellence in Management Award, the Dean’s Medal for Outstanding Service, the Victor E. Salerno Award, and the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree. The event took place at the Genesee Valley Club, and awards were presented by Dr. David Martin, Dean of the School of Business, and Vic Salerno ’66, Chair of the Board of Trustees.
This year’s recipient of the Excellence in Management Award (EIMA) was Jack DePeters ’73, Senior Vice President of Store Operations for Wegmans. The EIMA is the preeminent award bestowed by the School of Business. It recognizes an alumna or alumnus who demonstrates: outstanding leadership and managerial accomplishments in business, academia, or a community-based organization; a proven track record of significant accomplishments in the field of management; a record of community involvement; and a commitment to St. John Fisher College.
DePeters started his longtime career with Wegmans in 1966 as a part-time employee. In 1973, he was made a full-time employee holding the positions of Night Manager, Front End Manager, Store Manager, and Grocery Buyer. In 1982, he was named Head Grocery Buyer and Director of Wegmans Brand. And by 1986, he was the Director of Grocery, Dairy, and Frozen Foods.
In that role, DePeters was responsible for implementing category management at Wegmans, and he has been involved with many industry projects, including work with the Food Marketing Institute’s Efficient Consumer Response Committee. He was also the executive sponsor of the Collaborative Planning and Forecasting Replenishment Project, a process that is designed to enable Wegmans and its trading partners to create better business plans, including demand and supply plans.
In 1996, along with Colleen Wegman, now President, DePeters started the Nature’s Marketplace department and Italian Classic extension to the Wegmans brand. He was promoted to the position he holds today in 1999.
Outside of Wegmans, DePeters has been a member of the College’s Board of Trustees since 2007 and is currently serving as the Chair of the Facilities Committee. He is a former member of the United Way Board of Directors and continues to actively promote United Way causes. In addition, he currently heads the yearly campaign at Wegmans and assists with promoting the United Way campaign to area businesses.

The 2014 recipient of the Dean’s Medal for Outstanding Service is Sharon Napier ’81, Founder and CEO of Partners + Napier, an award-winning creative ideas agency that serves a diverse portfolio of local, national, and international clients. This award was created in 2007 to honor the exemplary and sustained contributions of individuals in the service of the School of Business. Outstanding service includes involvement in advisory boards, mentoring, fundraising, community relations, and accreditation.
Napier has more than 30 years of advertising industry experience and is a member of the Global Strategic Leadership Team of the independent agency network Project: WorldWide. In addition, she is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and events, including the Bloomberg CEO Summit in 2011 and the Wall Street Journal Market Leaders event in 2012, as well as the 4A's Transformation Conference, and Advertising Age's Small Agency Conference.
In 2011, Napier was named “Business Person of the Year” by the Rochester Business Council. She was also featured in the acclaimed book, The Corner Office: Indispensable and Unexpected Lessons from CEOs on How to Lead and Succeed, by New York Times columnist Adam Bryant. In 2013, she was honored as one of the “100 Most Influential Women in Advertising” by Advertising Age magazine.
Most recently, Napier was among the first 50 leaders admitted to the prestigious 50/50 Initiative, a movement by The Art Director’s Club, a global creative organization that aims to highlight senior-level female executives in the male-dominated advertising industry.
The 2014 recipient of the Victor E. Salerno Award for American Enterprise is Leah George ’13 (MBA). The Salerno Award recognizes Fisher graduates for their early career achievements, involvement in the community and the College, and potential for even greater success as their management careers mature.
George graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a B.S. in Communications in 2001 and spent 12 years working in print and broadcast media in a variety of roles including reporter, photographer, producer, and anchor. During that time, she received several awards and accolades for her work, including seven National Press Photographers Association Awards.
She left the news business in 2012 for the Greater Rochester Enterprise. That same year, she enrolled in the MBA program at Fisher, earning her degree in 2013. Her role at GRE has expanded since she completed graduate school, and now includes part-time on-the-ground regional outreach for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s Economic Development Growth Extension Program.
She is currently an active member of the Upstate New York District Export Council, the National Association of Foreign Trade Zones, and the Small Business Association’s Buffalo District International Trade Task Force. Additionally, she is a member of the YWCA Rochester and Monroe County Board of Directors and also serves on the organization’s Racial Justice Committee.

Lastly, the award ceremony also included recognition of Mark Peterson ’83, President and CEO of the Greater Rochester Enterprise, as Fisher’s Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree. He was chosen for his demonstration of excellence and outstanding commitment to the values of Beta Gamma Sigma, which are: honor and integrity, pursuit of wisdom, and earnestness.
Peterson has an outstanding background in regional economic development, financial administration, and high-level fundraising. By positioning the Greater Rochester region as a highly attractive target destination for businesses, continually marketing the region, raising funds, and attracting new business opportunities, he and the GRE team have successfully recruited dozens of new companies to the area, creating thousands of jobs and more than $500 million in new investment into the region.
A certified fundraising executive since 1992, Peterson has an impressive history of garnering more than $120 million at several world-class nonprofit organizations. In 2009, he was honored as the Robert A. Clinger Outstanding Professional Fundraiser by the Genesee Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Peterson is also very dedicated to giving back to his community and serves on a number of non-profit boards. He is currently the Chairman of the Board for CDS Monarch, one of the largest non-profit organizations in the region. And in 2008, he helped found St. John Bosco School, an independent Catholic school in Rochester that has received national recognition.
In 2011, Peterson was appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo as a member of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council, and he continues to serve on the council’s Executive Committee.
