Study Abroad Program Enhances Educational Experience
Every year, Fisher students pack their bags and take advantage of one of the many study abroad programs offered by the College, traveling to faraway places and getting an experience of a lifetime. And the program is now accepting applications for summer 2013 programs, which include travel to Italy (Florence), Spain (Seville), France (Caen), and Ireland (Waterford).
Chelsea Spain participated in the Spain program last summer, and said it was one of the greatest experiences of her life so far.
She lived in a Spanish family's home and said she felt welcomed into the family. Every week day, she attended classes and also participated in class excursions around the city to the different historical sites such as the cathedral, Christopher Columbus' tomb, and the Plaza de Espana. On weekends, she enjoyed short trips to cities close by including Cordoba, Cadiz, Rocio, Huelva, and Granada.
“Studying abroad was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I wouldn't change for anything. It is one thing to learn a language, but it is another thing to be immersed in the culture. When I studied abroad, I wasn't just a tourist in Sevilla, I was a Sevilliana,” said Spain.
Dan Kelley spent last June studying in Caen, France, with the Fisher in France Program. He was with six other students, and each spoke the language on different levels. But he said once they arrived, they were completely immersed in French culture — the language, the attitudes, and most importantly, the food.
On a typical day, he attended morning classes taught by a French professor. The group would have lunch with Dr. Marc Papé, Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Cultures, who traveled with them. After lunch, they would either have class or enjoy an excursion — which Kelley says were the highlight of his time there. They spent a week in Paris, and caught up with Dr. Terry May, former program director, and he showed them around the city.
“Going to France was easily the most important and beneficial decision that I have made in my life. Every day, I woke up with such excitement to go to class, meet someone new, see something amazing, or generally take in life. I highly recommend that every Fisher student, no matter the major or knowledge of language or culture, experiences a foreign culture, whether it be through a semester program or a summer program,” said Kelley.
He also said when he arrived home, he felt more confident in himself after learning how to live independently in a foreign country.
“I also made great friends, some of whom are Fisher students and we reminisce about the time we spent together, and some of whom are spread across the country, with whom I keep in contact through Facebook,” he said. “Participating in the Fisher in France program has truly changed my life and I cannot wait until I get the opportunity to go back.”
