Fisher Students Host Sweetheart Ball
Students from St. John Fisher College’s Students With A Vision (SWAV) and residents of The Friendly Home celebrated Valentine’s Day together with the annual Sweetheart Ball.
Students prepared for the event for weeks, sending formal invitations to each resident and decorating the Home’s auditorium. They also arranged for a student disc jockey to play music featuring old and new songs that would cater to both generations. In addition, a pair of professional ballroom dancers taught students the fox trot, cha-cha, the waltz, and other popular dances the residents grew up with.
“All of the volunteers who participated were absolutely wonderful! Some of the residents were upset because they were confined to their wheelchair, but once we showed them we could still dance with them as they were, they became more and more excited to be there,” said Jessica Pulver, SWAV member and event organizer.
At the end of the event, students handed out single carnations to all of the residents.
