RA Selection Process

New Candidates

RA Application

The RA application includes general, academic, and involvement related information. Applicants are also asked to provide contact information (name and email address) for two references and a thoughtful written response for two short answer questions.

Note about references: Candidate references must include a current (or former) RA and a person of their choice. References will be contacted via email to complete an online reference form. Potential references are more responsive to these requests if a candidate asks for permission in advance.

RA Information Session

In order to qualify for consideration, each candidate must sign in and attend a scheduled RA Information Session to gain a better understanding of the RA position.

Individual Interview

Each candidate must complete a 30 minute individual interview. The purpose of the individual interview is to give candidates an opportunity to talk about their leadership, work experience, relevant skills and strengths. Candidates will be contacted via SJFC email to schedule the individual interview. Attire for this interview should be professional/business casual (no jeans or shorts).

Group Interview

Each candidate must complete a 1.5 hour group interview. The purpose of the group interview is to give the candidates an opportunity to work in small groups to complete structured interactive activities with other candidates. Teamwork and decision making will be the focus of these structured activities. Candidates will be contacted via SJFC email to schedule the group interview. Attire for this interview is casual (no PJs or sweatpants). Participants should bring a writing utensil to the group interview.

Hiring & Placement

Candidates will be evaluated based on their application materials, participation in the RA selection process and compatibility with ResLife’s mission and goals. Decisions regarding hiring and placement are also based on the current needs of the residential community.

Returning Candidates

RA Application

The RA application includes general, academic, and involvement related information. Applicants are also asked to thoughtful written responses for two short answer questions.

Returning RA Presentation

Each returning RA candidate must complete a 30 minute presentation. The purpose of the presentation is to give returning RA candidates an opportunity to reflect on their strengths, struggles, and experience as an RA and to share what skills they would bring to the team if they returned for another year. Candidates will be contacted via SJFC email to schedule the individual interview. Returning RA candidates will also be provided with a detailed explanation of the presentation requirements. Attire for this interview should be professional/business casual (no jeans or shorts).

Job Performance & Evaluations

RA evaluations and performance documentation are considered when determining if a returning RA will be rehired for the following year.

Hiring & Placement

Candidates will be evaluated based on their application materials, participation in the RA selection process and compatibility with ResLife’s mission and goals. Decisions regarding hiring and placement are also based on the current needs of the residential community.
