M.S. in Literacy Education
Three professional certification tracks within the master’s in literacy education program give you the choice of adding to your teaching credentials in a variety of grade levels.
Designed for teachers who hold initial or provisional classroom certification, the program offers curricula leading to literacy education certification in:
- Birth - Grade 6
- Grades 5-12
- Birth - Grade 12
Classes are offered in the evening to accommodate working professionals. Each semester (including summer), you have the option of taking 1-3 classes, thereby controlling the tempo of program completion to suit your needs and busy schedule. You can complete the program in just 15 months, if you schedule your classes accordingly.
The program’s curriculum emphasizes teaching strategies, assessment, and literacy program evaluation. Courses are designed to help you, as a literacy educator, create programs that address the strengths and needs of individual learners, as well as make positive connections with families and communities in support of both in- and out-of-school literacy learning.
The birth-grade 6 and grades 5-12 options are 30-credit-hour programs. Because of the broader range of grade levels, the birth-grade 12 option requires 36 credit hours for completion.
