Executive Intern in the Division of Financial Affairs

Nate Lewis

Growing up as the child of two accountants, Nate Lewis was always drawn to studying in this field. “I immediately knew it was the career that I wanted to go into, and I haven’t been uncertain about it since,” explained Lewis who interned at the Bonadio Group which provides financial and consulting services.

Working as an audit intern on the government, compliance, and labor team, Lewis spent his time traveling to meet clients. He was supported and given the opportunity to work on tasks such as testing a client’s financial information and helping to prepare financial statements. The internship taught Lewis the importance of being concise and the value of communication when working with coworkers and clients.

Lewis believes that Fisher truly prepared him for his current position in the Student Government Association and as the executive intern working closely with the University’s chief financial officer. “I’ve always appreciated Fisher’s focus on developing students into well-rounded working professionals.” Through business classes, he realized that Fisher hones in on the importance of making yourself marketable to employers.

Lewis shared that a coworker told him that the team knew he would be a good fit because he went to Fisher. “Fisher’s reputation gave me an edge.”

Lewis recommends Fisher to any student looking to work in business. From skills acquired through clubs, professors, and classes, he feels he has been set up for a successful career in business. “I cannot thank Fisher enough for all of the opportunities on campus.”

Andrew Nordquist credits his opportunity to attend Fisher to a financial planner who advised his family to open a 529 college savings plan. “I hope to have that same positive impact by guiding other families in financial planning.”

During his time at Fisher, Nordquist made a connection that led to an internship and his current role at Northwestern Mutual. “I met my mentor through Fisher, and this professional relationship has helped me learn and grow in my early career.”

While the internship experience certainly prepared him for his full-time role as a financial representative, Nordquist explained that his classes at Fisher prepared him to make solid recommendations for his clients. “The financial planning, retirement planning, insurance and risk management courses all had content that I still use.”

He encourages students in the School of Business to make as many connections as possible: “Fisher connections could open doors for you for learning experiences outside of college.”

Lillian Uy

Inspired to pursue a career in sales, Lillian Uy explored her interests through an internship and found her career—a rewarding experience full of hard work. “Fisher has helped me by providing me with tactics I use daily,” explained Uy. She completed an internship with GLOW, a social media agency that provides media strategy, web development, and much more.

Throughout the internship experience, Uy expanded her knowledge of payroll services, public speaking, and responding to objections. “I have grown to appreciate hard work, patience, problem solving, perseverance, and to be versatile.” Uy appreciates these skills as life in sales brings a new challenge each day. In the internship experience, she felt she always had support, looked forward to meetings, and obtained great advice.

Currently, Uy works with ADP where she creates proposals and uses company technology to learn more about how to assist clients. She acts as a helping hand to new business owners to learn about what it takes to run a business. This includes paying employees, filing taxes, and even helping them with daily operations.

Uy believes Fisher provided her with connections and experience to prepare her for her career. From learning in classes to networking events, Uy's time at Fisher allowed her to master time management, gain knowledge in a field of interest, and learn tactics that provided her with a robust skill set to bring to an employer. Classes such as personal selling, sociology, public speaking, business ethics, and business communications boosted Uy’s success in her career. “It was these classes that helped me to be a well-rounded person and academic.”

Uy recommends that students seeking an inspiring job offer after college should complete an internship. “I not only found a job, but I found a career.”
