First-Year Writing

Incoming freshmen at Fisher are welcome to seek Writing Center input on their work for any and all first-year writing classes.

While you may request assistance with writing tasks from any of your current classes, Writing Center tutorials are ideal for a review of working drafts for any of the following first-year writing-intensive classes:

  • ENGL 101 - College Writing
  • ENGL 110 - Critical Reading and Writing
  • RW 199 - Research-based Writing (Core-required)
  • Any other writing-intensive Learning Community class

Outside of course-specific assignments, there are many other writing and research tasks that are appropriate for a WC tutorial. We can assist you with:

  • Understanding an assignment
  • Finding scholarly sources (using appropriate search engines)
  • Comprehending scholarly sources
  • Navigating library resources
  • Brainstorming
  • Outlining
  • Forming a thesis
  • Generating topic sentences
  • Writing organized and coherent summaries/responses/papers
  • Using MLA/APA/Chicago Style citations
  • Creating bibliographies/annotated bibliographies
  • Revising
  • Editing
  • Checking for correct grammar
  • Revising papers for final portfolios
  • Writing cover letters for final portfolio

Note: Two or more of the above tasks may be combined to make full use of the 30-minute time slot.
