Housing Policies and Procedures

This page provides a description of policies and procedures related to housing, including detripling, consolidation, break housing, extended stay, and the housing priority process.

Detripling Process

If a new student (first-year or transfer) is assigned to a rebate triple (not a standard triple), he/she will be offered the opportunity to detriple should a standard space become available. The opportunity to detriple will be offered in deposit date order (earlier deposits first) to students residing on the floor first, then to other students in the building. If no one from the hall takes the space, the space will be available to other students who are assigned to rebate triples in other halls.

If students decline to detriple to a standard space on their floor, they will not receive the triple rebate, since they are choosing to stay in the rebate triple. Students with questions about the detripling process should contact their residence director.

Consolidation Policy

The College reserves the right to consolidate students at all times when his/her roommate vacates. Consolidation is at the discretion of the Office of Residential Life. Students may be consolidated if their rooms are not at full occupancy and there are vacancies in the same building in which they live.

Before move in, the Office of Residential Life will consolidate students based on (1) students housing selection numbers or (2) date of deposit. After move in, the Office of Residential Life will consult with students, when the consolidation is not emergency in nature, to consolidate students through the steps outlined below:

Students who are required to consolidate may:

  • Find someone in the same situation to relocate in his/her room.
  • Relocate to someone else’s room in the same situation.
  • Be assigned by the Office of Residential Life to a new room or have a new roommate assigned based on (1) students housing selection numbers or (2) date of deposit.

Break Housing Policy

To stay on-campus during a College break (Thanksgiving, Easter, Spring Break), you must submit an application on ResLife Online. Applications will be reviewed by ResLife and you will be informed if you are approved or denied. You may not stay during winter break.

Fees and Fee Waivers

On the form, you will be asked why you are requesting to stay and, if approved, you will be charged a fee based on the length of the break. This charge helps defray the costs of having you on campus during times outside your contract.

If you are a student teacher or in-season athlete (requested to stay by your coach), you will not be charged a fee but will have to fill out a "Request for Housing During College Breaks" form.

If your home address on record is more than 225 miles from Fisher, you can request the fee be waived. Additionally, if you feel you have extenuating circumstances, you may also request the fee waived. Such requests can be made on the application.

Student Responsibilities

You are responsible for understanding that:

  • If currently on disciplinary probation, or if placed on probation between signing the agreement and the break, you will not be allowed to be in the residence halls during the break.
  • During the break you may not have guests (anyone not approved to stay for break), regardless of if they are Fisher students.
  • Food service is not provided during breaks.
  • You are expected to follow all College policies and if you violate any policy, including the guest policy for breaks, the violation will be documented and you will be asked to leave campus without a refund.
  • An email will be sent either confirming or denying your request to stay on-campus; it is your responsibility to check your Fisher email.
  • You may be billed for the break ($20 per night for the duration of the break period).
  • You must move out of your residence hall no later than 24 hours after your last final exam at the end of each semester.
  • During vacation periods, Facilities Services may find it necessary to enter rooms to make repairs.

Extended Stay Housing Policy

Students who complete their undergraduate coursework and graduate in December are eligible to continue their housing contract until its completion in May and remain in residence provided that they are matriculated into a graduate program at St. John Fisher College and are registered for and attending in a full time (minimum 9 credits) course load in the spring semester. This option is available as spaces permit.

Students wishing to pursue this option must contact ResLife no later than December 1 declaring their interest to stay in residence.

After it is determined how many residential students want to remain in housing, if there are fewer students who apply than spaces available, all students requesting an extended stay will be accommodated.

If there are more students who would like to remain in housing than spaces available, the extended stay process (below) will be used to determine who may stay on campus.

Part 1

Once it is determined how many students wish to stay in housing, we will sort them into the following priority levels:

  • Priority Category 1: Students from out of state and Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester Counties
  • Priority Category 2: Students from Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Sullivan, Ulster, Warren and Washington Counties
  • Priority Category 3: Students from Albany, Delaware, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie and St. Lawrence Counties
  • Priority Category 4: Students from Broome, Chautauqua, Chenango, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison and Oneida Counties
  • Priority Category 5: Students from Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chemung, Cortland, Erie, Niagara, Onondaga, Oswego, Steuben and Tioga Counties
  • Priority Category 6: Students from Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Seneca, Tompkins, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates Counties
  • Priority Category 7: Students from Monroe County
  • Priority Category 8: Students who are on disciplinary probation for their academic career regardless of home address

Part 2

If there are more students in a particular priority level than can be accommodated, the priority level will be further broken down in the following way:

  • Students will be grouped into the following levels:
    • Level A: Students with a cumulative 4.0 GPA
    • Level B: Students who were on the Dean's List in the previous spring semester
    • Level C: Remaining Students
  • Within each level, students will be separated into 2 groups:
    • Group 1: Students without parking permits
    • Group 2: Students with parking permits
  • Once students are in their level and group, names will be randomly drawn until the number of spaces for extended stay students has been reached.

Housing Priority Process

The information below outlines the process by which students will be prioritized to participate in the housing selection process.

Tier 1

Once the number of housing applications are determined, the priority categories below will be assigned to applicants.

  • Priority Category 1: Students from out of state and Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester Counties
  • Priority Category 2: Students from Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Sullivan, Ulster, Warren and Washington Counties
  • Priority Category 3: Students from Albany, Delaware, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie and St. Lawrence Counties
  • Priority Category 4: Students from Broome, Chautauqua, Chenango, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison and Oneida Counties

  • Priority Category 8: Students who are on disciplinary probation for their academic career regardless of home address

Tier 2

Within each priority category applicants will further be prioritized by level.

  • Students will be grouped into the following levels:
    • Level A: Students with a cumulative 4.0 GPA
    • Level B: Students who were on the Dean's List in the fall semester
    • Level C: Remaining students
  • Within each level, students will be separated into 2 groups:
    • Group 1: Students without parking permits
    • Group 2: Students with parking permits
  • Once students are prioritized, they will be assigned a random priority number. Students will be offered the opportunity to participate in the housing selection process in order of priority number, as determined by the number of spaces available on campus.

Students who are eligible through this process will proceed in the regular housing selection process as normal. Students who are ineligible through this process will be given first priority on the housing wait list and will have their housing deposits refunded.
